Third Graders visit creek

cleanup

Some third grade students worked to clean up the area around the creek (above) located near the school, while others (below) explored the creekbed to study aquatic organisms, find fossils, view evidence of human/animal activity (and their effects on the environment), and study the effects of erosion. All 3rd graders have learned about watersheds and the various factors that can negatively impact them.

Volunteers needed

Parents and guardians as volunteers enrich the school experience for both themselves and students.  Opportunities vary at different grade levels.  Under command memorandum, service members may have up to two half-days to volunteer in the Fort Knox Community Schools. To become a Van Voorhis School Volunteer, just follow these directions:

Please read the instructions carefully, then complete the necessary forms.

Print the forms, sign them, and take them to the Executive Services office, Rm 14 East Wing, Crittenberger Central Office, Bldg 4553 (located next door to the Patton Museum and Keyes Park).

School Supplies
The only school supply needed to be purchased by parents/sponsors/guardians is a see-through plastic or mesh backpack.  The school’s PTO has decided to purchase all of the school supplies for the students!

Early release day

The early release day at Ft. Knox Schools is Thursday. Dismissal at Van Voorhis will be at 2 pm on Thursdays.

Change to Student Immunization Policy

DoDEA, in alignment with the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, is committed to easing the challenges of military families moving between duty stations. For families transitioning to a new duty station and enrolling in DoDEA schools for the first time, there is now a provision, allowing a 30-calendar day grace period for parents/students to meet immunization requirements after school enrollment. Read more about the change, effective the first day of school for SY 10-11.

Education and Entertainment

Students had a terrific time at the Kentucky Derby Museum while learning so much about the state's proud tradition.

Students learned about some exotic animals when Kentucky Down Under provided a presentation for the school. Below, the kangaroo waits to regain some attention as Merlin, the Cockatoo is introduced.

Van Voorhis students enjoyed a fast-paced presentation by the Jump Rope Man, who used a combination of rope jumping exhibitions and interactive character building skits.  Each grade level later spent additional time in an age-appropriate “hands-on” workshop where jump rope techniques, fitness and fun were emphasized.
