Preschool

Preschool is a half-day program which takes place each school day, excluding Wednesdays. There is a morning and afternoon session each of these days. Wednesdays are set aside for parent workshops, home visits, parent-teacher conferences, team planning, and for staff development activities.

Children in the preschool program participate in a balance of active and quiet times during the day. They often work in small groups on individual or self-selected activities. Concepts and skills are acquired through meaningful activities such as playing with blocks, measuring sand and water, sorting and classifying materials, drawing and painting, and observing changes around them. Activities each day allow children to use large muscles by jumping, running, and climbing. Other activities such as cutting, painting, and constructing with small blocks help children develop small muscle skills. Children have opportunities to learn that reading and writing have meaning through books, story time, and free play. Teachers continually observe and interact with children, asking questions that encourage children to think and express their ideas.

Kindergarten through Fifth Grade

In Reading and Language Arts, Camp Lejeune uses a balanced literacy approach in teaching reading and writing. We teach skills that good readers use: Semantics (what makes sense in the story), Syntactics (what sounds correct grammatically), and Phonics (letter-sound relationships).

Children are encouraged to write legibly. Teachers provide direct instruction, as well as guided practice, in both print and cursive handwriting. Formal instruction and practice with print handwriting begins in first grade while cursive begins in third.

The Mathematics program is designed to develop students who can think logically and solve problems in their everyday lives. The language of math and the operations taught should enable students to communicate effectively and productively in today's technological society.

Students study life, earth, and physical science in our Science program throughout the years of elementary school. Students utilize hands-on experiments, reading and writing skills, research of printed materials, technology, project assignments, and scientific approaches as they study science.

Social Studies instruction develops the knowledge and skills necessary for students to become responsible, participating citizens. Content is selected from the 10 themes of the National Council of Social Studies: Citizenship; Culture; Time; Continuity and Change; Space and Place; Individual Development and Identity; Individuals, Groups, and Institutions; Production, Distribution, and Consumption; Power, Authority, and Governance; Technology and Society; and Global Connections.

Camp Lejeune Schools uses a comprehensive Health Education program for children in elementary school. The program promotes decision-making skills that will enable students to adopt healthy attitudes and to engage in healthy, responsible behavior.

The foundation of our comprehensive Physical Education program for all students is learning experiences which are designed to help each individual develop movement patterns in a variety of situations. Children at the primary level participate in experiences which include large muscle activities while children at intermediate grade levels develop refined body management skills.

The main objective of the Art program is to focus on the development of each student's creativity, problem-solving skills, and sense of self-worth. This objective is met through the study of artists and their contributions to cultural history, as well as the student's exposure to various art media and processes.

The Music program combines the areas of appreciation, personal expression, and hands-on experiences with musical concepts. Music study in the early years begins with fundamental experiences in the basic elements: melody, rhythm, harmony, form, tempo, tone, color, and dynamics. Attitudes, concepts, and skills are developed through experiences in singing, listening, and playing rhythm instruments. Music throughout history and from many cultures is also studied.

Our schools also have an Information Specialist, Educational Technologist, School Nurse, Counselor, Instructional Support Specialist, and Talented and Gifted Teacher at each location.

Brewster Middle School is structured into nine interdisciplinary teams. Each team focuses on a core curriculum of language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics.

Students are offered a variety of exploratory classes including business lab, industrial lab, home economics, band, art, music, theater, chorus, and foreign language. All students participate in physical education on a regular basis. Students are heterogeneously grouped in three of the core groups and are homogeneously grouped in math.

Ninth through Twelfth Grade

Lejeune High School is a small school of approximately 500 students with a low pupil-teacher ratio. The school follows the DoDEA Strategic Plan to prepare students who demonstrate competency in challenging subject matter in the core academic areas so that they may be responsible citizens, and lifelong learners, as well. The school provides three levels of instruction. Basic courses are designed for students who need to build basic skills in order to achieve in the standard curriculum or for some students identified as needing special assistance. The standard curriculum is designed to provide skills essential to succeed in post-secondary education. Honors and Advanced Placement courses are offered to superior achievers. The school offers an extensive athletic and extra-curricular program, and its teachers work with students outside the classroom in a variety of ways, including tutoring.
