Major Features:

Students and teachers receive support from our instructional specialist in math and reading, special education, gifted education and educational technologist. Every student K-5 receives weekly art, music and physical education.

Curriculum Spotlight:

  • READ 180: This is a systematic reading program that delivers individualized instruction that will improve fluency, create mental models and understand more complex written information through word analysis and vocabulary development. This is accomplished through a variety of reading experiences that integrate with History and Geography, People and Culture and Science and Math topics. The READ 180 model consist of a 90 minute rotation of activities. Twenty minute is spent in each of the four major components of the program with and additional ten minutes dedicated to a whole class wrap-up period. The four major components of READ 180 are Instructional Reading, Modeled Reading, Reading Independent Reading, and Teacher-Directed Instruction.
  • Reading Counts: A computerized reading incentive program for students in grades k-5. The books in the library are color coded to indicate lexiles so students are able to select books within their appropriate reading ability range and subject. After students complete a book, they will take a computerized test to show their skill in comprehension. Incentive celebrations are organized throughout the year. There is no formal evaluation associated with this program. It is designed specifically to promote interested in reading.
  • Technology Opportunities:A variety of technology supports student curriculum. Every class has four or more computers available for students. Every class has a digital camera, computer monitor projection capabilities for group viewing, closed circuit and cable TV, Video Recorder, a laser disk player.

    DeLalio also has a full computer lab available for teachers to conduct large group instruction. The Lab is always open for students and teachers. The Educational Technologist conducts software orientation classes and works with the teachers on internet research projects and any special instruction needed to operate equipment or learn to use a special computer program. The ET also serves as a resource for curriculum planning to determine how technology can improve the quality of education and achievement for the students.

  • Gaggle.net email for third through fifth grade students is a web based email designed to be used by student to enhance learning opportunities. The web environment is customized and controlled to keep our students safe. Students will be monitored and instructed to ensure safe usage. We believe this program will provide an opportunity to correspond with deployed parents, make new friends through pen pals and learn about cultures in other places. As email has become a critcal part of life in business, government, this is the next logical step for education in preparing students for the future.
  • Assessment
    Scholastic Reading Inventory (Computer-based reading assessment)

    Wright Group:Teachers use components of the Wright Group Assessment tool that they find useful in assessing the students reading abilities.

DRA is a Diagnostic Reading assessment to help teachers assess the capabilities of each student in the first, second, and third grades.

Extracurricular Activities

Chorus: Students have an opportunity to perform in the DeLalio Chorus coordinated by the music teacher. These students also have special performances for the public at the Jacksonville Mall.

Sport Cup Stacking Enrichment Program: Students in grades K-2 learn to stack cups at a fast pace with the physical education teacher. These students also had the opportunity to perform for the school in a recent assembly.

Color Guard: Students in grades 4-5 particapte in the raising and lowering of the American flag every day.
