Johnson Primary School serves approximately 800 students in preschool through second grade. The certified staff includes special area teachers for art, music, physical education, media skills and Spanish. Additionally, a full time nurse, guidance counselor, Gifted Resource Teacher (GRT), and educational technologist serve students. The special needs of students are met through instructional support in reading and mathematics. Johnson Primary School also serves students in special education through an inclusion model. Gifted students are served through the GRT program, which is a combination pullout/inclusion model.

Johnson Primary School opened in school year 2005-2006 as a result of merging the primary grades from the three main side base elementary schools. During 2005-2006 our Vision and Mission Statement were written with input from staff members and parents. The staff members embraced the NCA-CASI accreditation process and are continuing to evaluate progress towards a unified staff with a shared vision for school improvement.

Congruent with The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Community Strategic Plan Johnson Primary School 's instructional focus is a school wide effort to promote growth in literacy (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in an environment rich in materials and experiences as measured by student work and assessment. School improvement goals were selected based on writing assessment scores and Developmental Reading Assessment scores. Classroom schedules provide uninterrupted blocks of time for Reading and Writing Workshops in which students work independently and in small groups, reading, writing, and conferencing with teachers and peers. Additionally, teachers participate in staff development with a focus on strategies to increase student achievement.

At Johnson Primary School , children are placed in multiage classes. The multiage classes are K-1,1-2, and K-1-2 configurations. Teachers plan together and look at student work in grade level and cross grade level teams. Individual student needs are met through flexible grouping in both single and multiage classes.

Parent volunteers are an important part of the JPS learning community. We invite parents to volunteer in any capacity to ensure highest achievement for every child at JPS.
