"UPSE" PROBLEMS OF THE WEEK

For the week of 12/1-12/5

 

How to "UPSE" a problem

U:  Understand - what all does the problem tell you and what does it ask   

                           you to find out

P:  Plan - how are you going to solve the problem

                number sentence:  add, subtract, multiply, divide

                picture:  draw a picture using information in the problem

                make a graph

                make a table

               guess and check

S:  Solve - Use your plan to solve the problem

E:  Explain - Answer the question in a complete sentence

Example:  There are 5 birds in the tree.  There are 2 birds on the ground.  How many birds are there altogether?

U:  5 birds in the tree, 2 birds on the ground, how many birds altogether

 

P:  add

S:  5 + 2 = 7

E:  There are 7 birds altogether because 5 + 2 = 7.
