????? We change from non-fiction to fiction throughout the year. Many non-fiction books in our library are grade level. I told them to choose a non-fiction book that they are interested in.  Many non-fiction books have lots of vocabulary in them. I told the students that if they finish their book to reread it several times to ensure that they know and understand the vocabulary terms used in the book. For example, the characters in a space book may be the astronauts; the setting may be on the moon or on Mars (depending on thebook), etc. The students will use the literary elements throughout the year on all book assessments.

--------------------------------------------------

Oral Presentation Grading Rubric (download here)- The visual aide is a poster on poster board. Creativity is honored. For example, a student last year read, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants; she cut her poster board into a pair of pants. On her poster, she had the correct literary elements. It was fantastic. Please click on the grading link above!

Reading Counts Book Assessment************

The students are to search the library computer for their lexile level as well as a Reading Counts book. They read the book, then take a quiz on the computer in the Reading Counts program. The program will send their grade to my computer. Any computer in the school is available to take an RC quiz. The students are able to take these quizzes before school, during Advisory and during SSR at the end of the day.

Two Sculptors

I dreamed I saw a studio

And watched two sculptors there.

The clay they used was a child's mind

And they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher - the tools he used

Were books, music, and art.

The other; a parent, worked with a guiding hand,

And a gentle, loving heart.

Day after day, the teacher toiled with a touch

That was careful, deft, and sure,

While the parent labored by his side

And polished and smoothed it o'er.

And when at last, their task was done,

They were proud of what they had wrought.

For the things they had molded into the child

Could neither be sold or bought.

And each agreed they would have failed

If either had worked alone.

For behind the parent stood the school

And behind the teacher, the home.
