Teacher Contact: 703-784-0303 or QMHS Webmaster Course Description : Major Concepts/Content: This course is designed to equip the high school student with some basic industrial skills by providing information and experiences involving products and services that are used in every day life as young adults. An introduction to woodworking, metalworking, manufacturing, engineering concepts, construction and design will be taught through hands on experiences and the production of small projects. Emphasis will be place on safety and the proper use of hand, portable power, and machine tools. Major Instructional Activities: Students will analyze a problem, design a solution, develop an understanding of written technical communications (tech drawings, schematics, blue prints) to help portray an appropriate solution, test the design and make any necessary corrections. Activities will include hands-on material processing in both group and individual assignments and special projects. Major Evaluative Techniques: Assessment will be accomplished by: Successful completion of assignments. Assignments will be evaluated for structure, the correct use of concepts taught, documentation, conciseness, and appropriateness of the solution to the problem. Success may be demonstrated by written tests, oral tests, class work, projects, or other means deemed appropriate by the instructor. Essential Objectives: Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: Properly use limited metalworking tools and equipment to gain insight as to how metal products effect and enhance our everyday life. Distinguish quality from inferior products such as furniture. Use appropriate concepts (such as value) for making consumer purchasing decisions. Demonstrate the ability to properly use woodworking hand tools. Demonstrate a familiarity with woodworking machinery. |
