AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination

About AVID

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is an elective class for qualified students that prepares individuals in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility.  Students are encouraged to take the most rigorous courses available and are supported by a site team and tutors. Organization, study skills, note-taking skills, and college planning are stressed. AVID has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap.

Guest Speakers

Guest speakers are an important facet of the AVID program. Their stories encourage and motivate students.

Field Trips

Field trips to college nights and local universities, such as the University of Mary Washington and the US Naval Academy, help students to get a sense of what college is all about. Our students also job shadow engineers and scientists on base.

Homework

Occasionally students face extenuating circumstances during which homework cannot and should not be the top priority in their lives.  Some of the reasons I accept for requesting assignment extensions include visiting grandparents,  illness, tragedy, family vacations, and religious observances.  Some of the reasons I do not accept for requesting assignment extensions  include extra-curricular activities, parties, and family shopping outings.

Whatever the case, when students come to me prior to class to discuss late assignments, I do my best to be fair and flexible.   When students announce upon arrival to class that they are unprepared, they should not expect an extension without penalty.

In most cases, I do not give assignments that are due the next day.  Students with extensive extra-curricular commitments must plan ahead to compensate for days of the week which do not lend themselves to working on homework.
