About Second Grade

Language Arts

  • Students listen to a storyReading: In addition to building on decoding skills learned in first grade, students will use higher-level thinking skills to understand differences in plot and character development.Students will read books that have several chapters, and will use their reading skills across other academic areas during the school day. Although he or she should now have the skills to read independently, your child will still benefit from hearing good books and stories read aloud.
  • Writing: In second grade students develop more fluency as writers, producing longer and more detailed texts.Students learn to write as a way to communicate with others, and as a way to demonstrate understanding of a topic.

Math

  • Second graders focus on applying math to their daily lives. Students learn to represent their knowledge of concepts and patterns, and to become efficient problem solvers.

Science

  • Students use inquiry skills to explore and understand their natural world. They will learn to make more detailed observations and conclusions, and use data to help them validate information in the areas of physical, life, and earth sciences.

Social Studies

  • The standards for students in second grade focus on the concept of the neighborhood. Instruction centers on ways individuals and groups address human needs and concerns. Students learn the concepts of self-control, fairness, and leadership. They also explore the impact of language, art, music, and cultural elements on global understanding.
