Occasionally students face extenuating circumstances during which homework cannot and should not be the top priority in their lives. Some of the reasons I accept for requesting assignment extensions include visiting grandparents, illness, tragedy, family vacations, and religious observances. Some of the reasons I do not accept for requesting assignment extensions include extra-curricular activities, parties, and family shopping outings.
Whatever the case, when students come to me prior to class to discuss late assignments, I do my best to be fair and flexible. When students announce upon arrival to class that they are unprepared, they should not expect an extension without penalty.
In most cases, I do not give assignments that are due the next day. Students with extensive extra-curricular commitments must plan ahead to compensate for days of the week which do not lend themselves to working on homework.
