West Point MS 5th Grader is Grand Prize Winner of the MLB Essay Contest on Breaking Barriers

The essay contest challenges youngsters to write about how they have overcome barriers or obstacles while using values embodied by the late Jackie Robinson, who became the first black man to play major league baseball in 1947. Ashurst Elementary Students Showcase their Cross-Curricular Heritage Projects

Second grade students at Ashurst Elementary School learned about their heritages as they completed a cross-curricular project that began with creating and sharing of "All About Me" posters, timelines of their life, and family trees that used pictures and words in English and Spanish. Students explored their heritage by talking to family members and researching their countries of origin online. Each child created a project that "Dressed their Ancestor" in traditional clothes and held the country flag. View additional pictures and read more on this project here. |

Honorable Jessica Wright Visits West Point Elementary School

4th grade students led Honorable Wright on a tour during her visit to West Point Elementary School. The tour began with an explanation of the school mission and vision statements, and the two school improvement goals and strategies that are used to meet those goals. The students were excited to show Honorable Wright that even the kindergarten and preschool students are writing across the curriculum. The students told Honorable Wright about their fitness and healthy eating program as well as their celebrity chef program. Read an article on the visit that was written by some students. |
Burrows ES Students Drop Eggs Following the Engineering Design Process

4th/5th grade students at Burrows ES used the Engineering Design Process (EDP) to design containers to hold eggs that would survive a drop from a two story height. They were given guidelines and constraints as to what they could use to create their container. Following through the EDP process of Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve, the students worked individually and in groups to develop their containers. On Friday with several picture-taking parents present, the students tried out their containers. Ten out of 12 projects successfully landed with their precious cargo intact!! The project engaged the students in the EDP experience preparing them for the STEM Projects we are focusing on for the remainder of April. |

Ashurst Elementary School Students Deliver Presidential Presentations

Students at Ashurst Elementary School completed a cross-curricular project about the presidents of the United States. Each student chose a president to focus their research on and collaborated with the information specialist, educational technologist and music teacher to create their project. The culminating project was a Presidential Presentation to parents where students dressed as their president and delivered their memorized speeches. Read More Here |
Antilles Middle School Achieves Gold Level Status in MATHCOUNTS Club Program and Captures 1st Place in Competition

| For the third consecutive year, Antilles Middle School has achieved Gold Level Status in the MATHCOUNTS Club Program. As part of the school-wide problem solving intervention, students solve math problems related to the content studied in all their classes. The school also has an active after-school Math Club with 30 students participating this year. Pictured above are students that were selected to represent the school in the MATHCOUNTS competition program. The students captured first place by half a point after outscoring the rest of the field in the all-important team round. Read the full story here. |
Congratulations to the QM/HS Advanced Band

On Friday, March 22, the QMHS Advanced Band attended the 2013 District 15 Band Assessment, held at Brooke Point High School. Each band performed three pieces prepared from the Virginia State Required Music Listing, in addition to being evaluated for sight reading. The QM/HS Advanced Band received ratings of "Excellent" across the board from EVERY judge! Each band member will now receive Virginia State medals for this accomplishment. Congratulations to the Advanced Band for a MAGNIFICENT performance and for representing Quantico in such a positive and professional way!! Great job, folks!!! |

| Quantico Middle/High School’s MCJROTC Drill Team took top honors at the Mount Vernon High School Invitational Drill Competition on March 16, 2013. The Team won several trophies including 1st Place Overall Drill Team Champions, 1st Place Platoon with Arms, 1st place Platoon without Arms, 2nd Place Color Guard, 2nd Place Personnel Inspection/Knowledge, and six Individual Knockout Awards. |
Antilles High School Student, Teacher Chosen to Attend History Institute

An Antilles High School junior and her history teacher have been selected as one of 15 teacher-student teams who will participate in this year's Albert H. Small Student/Teacher Institute. The in-depth research of D-Day and World War II experience, titled, "Normandy: Sacrifice for Freedom," will take place in Washington, DC, and Normandy, France, from June 15-27, 2013.
