Student Cooperative Association (SCA)

WKID-TV

WKID-TV is a closed-circuit television program that airs daily at Ashurst.  Whether working on the student staff or appearing as a guest on WKID-TV, children have opportunities to make gains in their poise and communication skills as well as learning to operate technology equipment and work cooperatively and responsibly.

All Ashurst students appear on WKID several times during the school year.  Students are given the opportunity to lead the "Pledge of Allegiance," participate in classroom news, appear on the show for their birthday, present "Reading Corner," or be a guest menu or weather person.  In addition to the above mentioned parts of the show, WKID also includes a patriotic song, the news, a sign language lesson, Recycle Ranger who teaches ecology, Math Matters, and other special features.

Anchored and run by Ashurst students under the direction of two teacher sponsors, the staff consists of about forty students.  The student staff operates the camera, sound equipment, teleprompters, and lap top computers which display the Doppler weather information or add special effects and music.  Information, graphics, and pictures are often downloaded from the Internet and used on WKID to further enhance the skills and content being taught in the classrooms.  WKID (originally called WAES) began at Ashurst in 1989 and is broadcast from its own studio unit at Ashurst.  The program is viewed in all of the classrooms.  Parents are encouraged to watch a live show when their children appear on the program.  Parents are notified in advance if their child is appearing on WKID.   An additional service is provided to make video copies of the program for parental requests.

There are two teachers who serve as co-sponsors for WKID.  Staff members are chosen from classroom teacher recommendations.  All classroom teachers are involved in helping with the preparation of and having their students present their class news.  Classroom teachers also provide students to lead the pledge and to serve as guest menu or weather presenters.  There is continuous communication between the sponsors and teachers for suggestions for improvement of the program.  Electronic email is used to notify teachers of their turn for class news or guest appearances.  Teachers and support staff appear on the program for their birthday, just like the students do.  Teachers offer ideas for subjects to be integrated with the program to augment their classroom teaching.

Student Cooperative Association

The Ashurst Student Cooperative Association (SCA) is a group of students who help promote good citizenship throughout the school year.  Two students from each classroom, kindergarten - grade three, are chosen to represent each classroom.  Its purposes are to develop good citizens at school, at home, and in the community, to encourage better cooperation and sharing responsibilities between students, teachers, and parents, to help to provide a program of enjoyable activities, to help in working on community projects, to promote good sportsmanship and to provide students with opportunities for developing their leadership qualities.  The SCA representatives plan activities and share ideas, which they then share with their classmates.

CARES

CARES is an established incentive program to motivate students to develop good citizenship qualities. Assemblies are held throughout the school year, where five children from each classroom are recognized for exhibiting the qualities of a good citizen. It's important to keep in mind that CARES awards are not "won." They are earned through the consistent demonstration of the positive character traits of:

Cooperation
a positive
Attitude
Responsibility
Effort
good
Sportsmanship

Every CARES award recipient will receive an official CARES certificate and a pencil that indicates the specific character trait the student has demonstrated.

Homework Club

The Homework Club meets every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3:15-4:00. During this time, a club sponsor provides academic support, enabling the student to more successfully complete some homework assignment(s). The Homework Club provides a wonderful opportunity for the student to correctly practice the skills that were introduced during the school day. Parents are encouraged to review the homework assignment(s) with the child each night and provide additional study time as needed. This repetition and study is necessary for new learning to take place.
