Reading Counts
Ashurst uses the Scholastic Reading Counts! program. Reading Counts! is a reading incentive program produced by Scholastic Books. This program uses Lexiles to determine the students' reading abilities. Based on the students' Lexile, students are encouraged to read books appropriate for their reading level. We recommend that students read a Reading Counts! book a week. For the more advanced/mature reader, more time is allocated for the completion of the book. Students choose a book from the reading list (see below). In order to check for reading comprehension, the student needs to take a Reading Counts! test, give an oral or written review, or produce another product acceptable to the teacher. The Reading Counts! tests are done on the computer. This test is a multiple-choice quiz on the book consisting of ten questions that the computer pulls from a group of thirty questions.
The complete Reading Counts! list, including book Lexiles, and reading levels is available in a portable document file that can be downloaded to your computer. This list will be updated as new quizzes are uploaded.
All quiz lists current as of May 10, 2007.
Our school is proud to belong to the New York & Virginia DDESS, the Domestic Dependent Elementary & Secondary Schools, and the Department of Defense Education Activity.
