Burrows' Fourth Graders are composers!!
The students in the fourth grade classes are becoming “composers.” The dictionary tells us that a composer is, “...someone who writes music.” The students are utilizing the latest tools in music technology to learn the art of composition.
Using the midi keyboard that is connected to a computer, the students devised and improvised compositions for the keyboard using only the black keys. This style of composition (called “pentatonic”) allows for an infinite number of combinations of notes to be used, while at the same time making the composition always sound pleasing to the ear and to the audience.
The music was composed using the program, “Sibelius.” Students examined the notation and identified notes that they have previously learned on the music staff. At the conclusion of the compositions, each student announced, “I am a composer!” and then autographed a special Composers' Notebook that is kept in the music room. The musical score was then printed and photocopied so that each student composer was able to take home an autographed copy of the original musical score.
The students certainly have enjoyed this creative process.
The students in the fourth grade classes are fulfilling the following DoDEA Curriculum Content Standards:
MU7a: The student acquires technology skills and vocabulary that are developmentally appropriate.
MU7b: The student expands and uses technology skills to create music.
