Russell Elementary School
Parent Educators' Association (PEA)

The Parent Educators'Association(PEA) is comprised of an Executive Board:  Presdent, Vice-presdent, Secretary, Treasurer, two Members At Large, and teacher representatives.  The school's principal is also part of this board.  The Board meets once a month, with committee meetings as needed.  Elections, typically, take place the first month of the school year due to the transient population at Quantico.  If you are interested in running for an office, you may call the school office at (703) 221-4161.

The main purpose of the PEA is to support the school staff and students.  Fundraisers are planned throughout the year and they are as follows:  Open House/Book Fair/Pizz and Bake sale evening, T-Shirt sales, Box Top and Labels, and bake sales before evening music programs.  The PEA also provides popcorn or treats every other Thursday.  All revenues are used to enhance the already existing programs of our staff.  Purchases in the past have included stage curtains, ice machine, headphones for the computer lab, die cuts, thermometer for the clinic, wonderful cubbies and book cases for our kindergartens, and other items requested by the staff.

The PEA Executive Board is complete. The ballot return was enormous. Thank you very much for participating and showing us that you care.
The Board is working hard to present the Russell students and their families with fun and educational events, as well as running the book fairs, box top and empty cartridges collections, bi-weekly popcorn productions, and much more.

Book Fair
Blizzard
The PEA is happy to announce the Book Fair is coming to Russell at the end of this month.
On Tuesday, October 30th, the students will have a chance to create their wish list. The Book Fair will be open during the Family Science Night on the same day.
The opening hours for the rest of the week are 11 am through 4 pm.
This is a great opportunity to volunteer. Each volunteer will receive 10% off purchased books! Check out our on-line sign up at our Google account. More on that in our volunteer opportunity article on the back.

Family Science Night
The Russell PEA is proud to announce our first Family Science Night on Tuesday, October 30th from 6 to 7:30 pm.
We will set up some science experiment stations in the gym. These are hands-on tasks for the students, some require parents to help.
The experiments include:
- From Glue to Glob
- Wonderwhirler
- Iron in Breakfast Cereal
- All Charged Up
and many more.
Russell’s Science Integration Teacher has graciously agreed to work with us in choosing age appropriate experiments as well as insightful comments on how to set up the stations. Thank you

In this place the Russell PEA would like to show our appreciation to a volunteer.
At the last Popcorn Thursday, our volunteer single handedly kept the popcorn machine popping, collected the money, and distributed the popcorn to all classrooms. More than 200 bags of popcorn!
Thank you, for your time and dedication.

We received a tremendous amount of Box Tops already. Our volunteers are very busy with cutting and bundling to get all of the box tops out by the deadline of October 31.
Just a quick reminder to please include all of your Russell children’s names on the envelope/baggy when you turn in the Box Tops. We are giving points to all siblings. The winning classroom will get a PEA sponsored pizza party.
Please refer to the hand-out that was sent home recently. If you have any questions, please contact call 703-441-0450.

Volunteer Opportunities
There are several great volunteer opportunities available. Remember, our events and operations run only as smoothly because of your involvement and volunteer spirit. No amount of time is too small, and in most cases you can set your own schedule.
Book Fair: We need volunteers to man the store during it’s opening hours. Since we are planning on being open during the Family Science Night, we really need a big presence of volunteers to deal with the crush of customers during that time. All Volunteers will receive a 10% discount on all books purchased.
Popcorn: Every other Thursday the PEA offers popcorn to everybody at Russell for only 25 cents! This is very labor intense and we need more volunteers. The hours are usually from 8:30 to 11.
Here is the easiest way for you to sign up (on-line):
• Go to Google.com
• Click on More
• Select Documents
• Sign in as russellpea, password raccoon
• Select the event you would like to volunteer for.
• Enter your name and phone number
Of course you can always call 703 221 2962 to reserve a time slot at any event.

Family Science Night
Our first ever Family Science Night was a huge success. The students enjoyed all the experiments, the balloon one surely was the most popular one.
This is an event that we hope to repeat next year. If you have any comments, please let us know how we could improve the event.

Reading Counts Store
One afternoon in December we are opening our Reading Counts Store.
The Second and Third Graders are allowed to shop with the Reading Counts points that they have earned so far.
There are always a lot of exciting items and the students really enjoy to shop. What a great reward for doing your reading!
For a list of all the reading counts books go to the Russell School website at:
http://www.am.dodea.edu/NY_VA/quantico/russell/
Then click on the Reading Counts button. To bring up all the books go to the Quiz List.
Keep earning those points!

Before and after the performance the PEA is hosting a Bake Sale. The profits from the bake sale will be divided equally among the participating grades’ class rooms.
Closer to the performance date, we will send out a request for baked goods to all Second and Third Grade families.

The teenagers from the JROTC program under the leadership of the LtCol. and StgMaj. did a fantastic job manning the tables at the Family Science Night. Their friendliness and willingness to help made this event a success.
Thank you JROTC for your time and dedication.

Gardening Party 2008
Our principal had a fun idea for a Family Event in the spring.
Since there is no Green Thumb Club this year, the inner court yard is a bit bare. Also, there are a few areas around the school grounds that could use some attention from some gardeners.
We decided to make this a Russell Family affair in the spring with the PEA hosting a Gardening Party. We would select a Saturday, buy plants, order pizza, and invite all interested families to bring their gardening tools and know-how to “beautify” Russell grounds.

To get this off the ground we would need a Gardening Committee. Do you have gardening experience? Do you know which plants are drought resistant (there will be no watering, except rain during the summer break) and hopefully bloom into the fall? Can you help with the logistics of getting plants, mulch, and fertilizer to the school?
If you are interested, please log on to the Russell PEA Google site and sign up, we hope to have our first Gardening Committee meeting at the beginning of 2008.
