What's Happening in Ms. YP's Class
Reminders
November 16--November 20 , 2009
.

We are in the third section of our Reading—Literacy Place. We will be reading pages 36-64 this week--“Music, Music for Everyone ” (From the section “Lights! Camera! Action! ”). Your child is to take the book home on Monday and Tuesday—to read to a member of the family or friend. They may take the book home everyday as long as it is returned everyday. If you would like for them to take it home for the weekend, they may do so. If they miss a word, have them pronounce the word. Ask them questions about what they have read. Discuss. It is imperative that you read with your child at least 20 minutes every day.
We will be reviewing previous lessons, as well as going adverbs (tell where, when, or how something happens), and the pronouns I and me.
They will write about a younger person helping an older person..
We are doing Reading Counts testing in the classroom and in the lab when a student reads a book. Please encourage your child to continue reading at home. They take their library books home to read. They will take a Reading Counts test on the book as soon as it has been completed.

Please continue working with your child with money. We will begin working on the time chapter and learning how to tell time.

The students will use all the words for the test plus two bonus words from the previous lessons. Please make sure that your child studies the spelling words daily. I staple the next week’s word list into their planner every week. If you like, you can write their words in their planner and put their list on the refrigerator.
Spelling tests are always on Friday unless we have a four day week, where a Friday is a holiday. We will then have the test on Thursday. Every Monday, we write our spelling words five times each. On Tuesday, we write the words in ABC order. On Wednesday, we write sentences. On Thursday, we will write a story using at least 5 of the spelling words. This will be read to the class. All this is done in class. If you want your child to practice this at home that will be all right. If they do not finish in class, this becomes homework—but must be returned the next day.
Social Studies--we are going over Colonial America. We will learn how our ancestors came to the Americas and how Thanksgiving came about.
If your child is home sick (please do not send your child to school if they have a temperature), or absent for any other reason, they still have to make up the work. The work is left on their desk so that they may begin working on it when they get back. Whatever they do not finish will be taken home for them to complete and return. It must be returned within three days or the grade will become a zero.
Please make sure that your child does not bring toys to school. They will be collected and returned at the end of the day. If it continues, their parent will need to come to school to collect the toys.
Snacks are permitted in my class. Your child may bring in a nutritious snack every day to eat between 9:30 and 9:45. Please do not send candy for your child’s snack.
Your child is taking a binder home with all their work for the week, as well as previous weeks in the nine weeks. Each section needs to be checked so that you can see where your child is having difficulty. The gradesheet will be in the front of the binder. Please sign the gradesheet so that I will know that you have viewed your child’s scores and work for the week. Please make sure that your child returns the binder every Monday. Please do not take the papers out of the binder. I want to keep the papers in the binder until the end of the nine weeks so that you can see their progress. This will also help you on what your child needs to work on at home. Please work with your child at home.
