What's Happening in Ms. M.J.'s 5th Grade Class?

Reminders

The Book Fair is going on the week of October 1st.  Monday the class will have a chance to preview the books to see what they would like.  Be sure to ask your child about all the wonderful books!

I will be testing the children on our first reading unit Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Monday, October 8th is Columbus Day - No School!

Look at what we're learning!

Reading

We are working on identifying the theme of a story (What idea/thought is the author trying to make?) and identifying the sounds of the blends: bl, cl, fl, and pl.

Our first book report will be due October 31st.  Here is the rubric I will use to assess the reports.

  • 20 points  Title (Underlined)
  • 10 points  Author (Under title)
  •  5 points  Space after author
  •  5 points  Illustrator
  • 10 points  Main characters
  • 40 points  4 sentences about the best part of the story (Why you like it, capitals, punctuation marks, and correct spelling)
  • 10 points  Neatness

Grammar

Students are learning to identify describing words (adjectives - tell color, size, shape, and how many) and the correct use of the period.

Spelling

Students are spelling words with the final e.  We are also reviewing past spelling lists during the week.

Rule:  If a word has a vowel followed by a consonant and final e, then the vowel is long and says its name.

Math

We are working on patterns.

Science

Students continue to learn about life cycles.

Social Studies

We are focusing on different family traditions and history.
