Welcome to the World of Reading and Technology

Greeting Students

Click here to explore the technology resources available in the Information Center.

The FRES Library has over 18,000 resources available for circulation. This year alone the library has added 698 new items. The library has 24 computer stations that have access to the Internet and the Alabama Virtual Library, which has over 60 databases. The library has over 7,513 Reading Counts! tests which students can take to check their comprehension. The reading theme for this year is "Racing into Reading.” Parent volunteers are always welcome!

LIBRARY RULES AND DISCIPLINE

We follow the school discipline plan. Library rules, such as book return, lost book replacement, etc., will be discussed with students on their first library visit.

LIBRARY RESOURCES

Library resources include books, periodicals, audio-visual materials, computers, an on-line card catalog, on-line encyclopedias, Reader’s Guide To Periodical Literature, Current Biography, Women History, Animal Encyclopedia, Living Books on CD-Rom, and other CD-Rom programs.

CLASS ACTIVITIES

During “story time,” students are introduced to different authors and books. In addition, the students learn library skills, do research, read silently, check out books, work on computer activities, and read magazine articles. They also participate in library learning games and a variety of drawing and coloring activities. Since their research often requires the use of Internet resources, the students receive training in Internet safety and appropriate use.

MOTIVATIONAL READING PROGRAM

All students are encouraged to participate in the Reading Counts! program. It is designed to motivate children to read on and above their reading level. We have 7,513 book quizzes in our database. Students can read books from the library, classrooms, or home. Encourage your children to participate and see their reading scores soar. The Reading Counts! list is on our website.

List of Scholastic Reading Counts! Tests (PDF 3308 Kb)

Students have the opportunity to take quizzes during their computer lab and class time. In addition, they may take Reading Counts! tests in the library from 2:30 - 3:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday - provided that the Information Specialist is present.

BOOK CHECK OUT

Students can check out two books at a time. Students check out books during their scheduled library time each week. They can also check out books any time they are allowed to come to the library from class. They can check out books after school if they are walkers and have written permission from their parents to stay after school. Also, students can check out books before school from 7:30 to 7:45.

PARENTS are allowed to use the library and check out books from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Parents are highly encouraged to check out three books.
