Counseling Services

The primary goal of the counseling program is to promote and enhance student learning through preventive activities, and by addressing individual student learning and/or adjustment needs. Each class receives large group lessons on a variety of topics. Personal counseling to individuals or groups of students is offered as needed in areas such as divorce, blended families, dealing with death, self-esteem issues, anger control, and friendships.

The counselor sponsors several school “clubs” having to do with personal issues. Students new to the school are a part of the “Newcomers' Club." Once a month the counselor meets with these students to help them become better oriented to the school and community and to help them feel like they are fitting in. In addition to new students, the counselor meets monthly with new parents for an orientation. At this meeting, parents are presented with some information that is not necessarily in the Parent Handbook. This also gives parents an opportunity to ask questions of the principal and nurse as well as the counselor. A tour of the facility is given. Also on a monthly basis, the counselor meets with the New Adventures Club, made up of students who will be departing for another location.
