Information about the Guidance Program

Counselor’s Corner

Many parents often ask what counselors do, and my response is that a counselor’s main role is to help students succeed. Counselors take a vital role in each and every child’s education by providing the child with the necessary tools to succeed and cope in an ever changing and sometimes violent world. Collaboration between the counselor and teacher is commonplace and ensures that children’s needs are identified and a plan of action takes place. The DoDEA’s school counselors provide a comprehensive guidance and counseling program to all students. The school guidance program helps build a foundation for life-long learning by assisting students in developing self-respect, awareness of others and positive learning attitudes. School counselors provide direct and indirect services and activities to students, families, and school staff for developing strategies that deal with educational, personal and social challenges that may interfere with the academic process. The guidance and counseling program is a comprehensive program that addresses three areas of student development – personal/social; academic; and career planning.

The purpose of the guidance program is to help each individual student achieve his/her highest growth mentally, emotionally, and socially. We try to do this in several ways:

  1. Individual Counseling
  2. Small Group Counseling
  3. Classroom Guidance Instruction
  4. Parent Conferences
  5. Special Education Coordination
  6. Student Referral Services – (Includes Special Education, Gifted and Talented, Speech, and ESL)

Some of the topics covered in the course of a year include:

  1. Conflict Resolution
  2. Character Education
  3. Bullying
  4. Diversity
  5. Drug Awareness
  6. Self Awareness
  7. Safety

The counseling department also coordinates activities such as:

  1. Deployment Tea
  2. “Caught in the Act” Program (promoting random acts of kindness)
  3. New Comers Club
  4. Deployment Club

Parents and students are encouraged to see the counselor whenever the need arises. Please feel free to call the school counselor with any special needs or concerns at 598-4473.
