What's Happening in Mrs. CK's Classroom
News for the month of December
We had lots of fun learning about Native Americans. We did some very good writing about The Chief's Blanket. We also painted a story on a "buckskin" and wrote about it. They are in the hall until Thursday.
We are starting our Christmas around the world unit. We made our passports and suitcases yesterday. We will be "traveling" to Germany, Mexico, Sweden, England, and France. We will learn about different Christmas customs. We are also fortunate to have parents volunteering to share about their traditions (one from Germany/Poland and the other about Hanukkah).
This week, we are reading Anansi Goes Fishing. We're focusing on cause and effect.
Next week, we'll read Rosa and Blanca. We'll learn more about theme, plot, and predicting.
The week of December 16th, we'll be sharing Christmas stories and doing activities associated with them.
We will have Guided Reading homework Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week. Please ensure that your child reads for 20 minutes each evening and fills out their reading log. Reading logs are due each Friday.
Writing - Six Traits
3. Word Choice
4. Sentence Fluency
We are working hard on writing a good paragraph. We're learning to proofread our work and find mistakes using the COPS plan (capitals, organization, punctuation, and spelling)
editing, editing, editing!!!!!!! This is a BIG second grade standard we have to master!
We'll have spelling homework each week. The spelling lists are sent home, but if they're misplaced, you can find them on Spelling City under the story's name.
Spelling homework is due each Friday. We'll have a spelling test each Friday.
We'll do a fast fact practice daily with a test on Friday. Please practice both addition and subtraction as both will be on the fast fact tests for the rest of the year. We're down to 5 minutes, so if they're not practicing at home, please help them.
We're coming to the end of our second math unit. This unit covered place value to 100, solving math story problems (whether to add or subtract), using addition to check your subtraction answer, and the associative property of addition. We will take this test Friday, December 13th.
I am deleting IXL as homework. Please have your child go to IXL over the weekend or on a night when they don't have as much homework. They enjoy it and it is a wonderful site for children who need extra help as well as children who need more of a challenge.
aplusmath.com You can create all kinds of fact problems on this site and print for your child to practice.
http://www.mathfactcafe.com- you can create worksheets for your child to practice their addition and subtraction facts.
