What's Happening in Mrs. CK's Classroom
Science
We are working hard on on new STEM project: Windmills. We're learning more about mechanical engineering. We looked at how different things work, such as a beater, a mechanical pencil, a glule stick, and a can opener.
This week, we'll design and build different sails with different materials. We'll test them to see how they did and then work on revising them to make them better.
Reading
We are reading Red, White, and Blue this week. We will have Guided Reading Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please ensure that your child reads for 20 minutes each evening. Their G.R. homework can count toward that time.
The nights that we don't have Guided Reading, your child should pick a book on their level that they're interested in and read that to you.
Please be sure to sign daily.

Grammar
We'll learn how to use quotation marks in our writing. We'll also continue to review adjectives, nouns (both proper and regular nouns), verbs, adverbs, contractions, and compound words. (These are all areas that we have been introduced to this year).
Spelling
We'll be learning about base words and inflected endings, such as "clap, clapped, clapping," as well as reviewing our wall words. Spelling test on Friday. The words were sent home Monday.
Be sure to check out our page at Spellingcity.com. Your child can practice all their spelling words on this website. (look for the story title to see the spelling words each week).

Math
We'll do a fast fact practice daily with a test on Friday. Please practice both addition and subtraction as both will be on the fast fact tests for the rest of the year.
We're finishing up Unit 10 which deals with place value to the 10 thousands, symmetry, reading a thermometer, the "in/out" rule, counting money and making change. We'll have a test Monday of next week.
Please, please, please have your child go to IXL a few times a week. I have seen such an improvement in the children that use it on a regular basis.
