What's Happening in Mrs. CK's Classroom

News for the week of April 21, 2014

Reading

We will read Just Like Josh Gibson.  The skills we'll focus on are context clues, compare and contrast, and visualizing.

There is no guided reading this week.  I'll be testing each child's reading one on one while the class is doing literacy centers.  Please ensure that your child reads a book of their choice for 20 minutes each evening. Reading logs were sent home Monday and are due Friday, April 25th.

Writing - Six Traits

1. Ideas

2. Organization

3. Word Choice

4. Sentence Fluency

5. Voice - We're focusing on this trait this week.

6. Conventions

We are working hard on writing a good paragraph. We're learning to proofread our work and find mistakes using the COPS plan (capitals, organization, punctuation, and spelling).  We've done a lot of writing this quarter, so I hope you see a difference at home, in your child's ability to write a good paragraph and edit his/her mistakes.

editing, editing, editing!!!!!!! This is a BIG second grade standard we have to master!

Spelling

We'll have spelling homework each week. The spelling lists are sent home, but if they're misplaced, you can find them on Spelling City under the story's name.  The story's name this week is Just Like Josh Gibson.  Spelling focuses on contractions.  Spelling homework is sent home on Monday .  Please return it on Friday.  We'll have our spelling test Friday.

Math

We'll do a fast fact practice daily with a test on Friday. Please practice both addition and subtraction as both will be on the fast fact tests for the rest of the year. We're down to 6 minutes, so if they're not practicing at home, please help them.  We are doing double digit addition and subtraction, with regrouping.

We'll continue to review all skills covered this year.  We'll now move on to multiplication.  Please help your child to make the connection that multiplication is repeated addition.  Skip counting is an important skill for your child to master and will help them with multiplication.

IXL is a wonderful way for your child to practice in areas they're having difficulty in.

Unit

We'll continue our study about mechanical engineering.  We'll be building and testing our sails this week.
