What's Happening in Mrs. CK's Classroom

News for the week of April 7, 2014

We will read Horace and Morris.  The skills we'll focus on are author's purpose, asking questions for comprehension, and the difference between theme and plot.

We will have Guided Reading homework Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please ensure that your child reads for 20 minutes each evening. Reading logs were sent home Monday and are due Friday, April 11th.

Writing - Six Traits

1. Ideas

2. Organization

3. Word Choice

4. Sentence Fluency

5. Voice - We're focusing on this trait this week.

6. Conventions

We are working hard on writing a good paragraph. We're learning to proofread our work and find mistakes using the COPS plan (capitals, organization, punctuation, and spelling).  We've done a lot of writing this quarter, so I hope you see a difference at home, in your child's ability to write a good paragraph and edit his/her mistakes.

editing, editing, editing!!!!!!! This is a BIG second grade standard we have to master!

We'll have spelling homework each week. The spelling lists are sent home, but if they're misplaced, you can find them on Spelling City under the story's name.  The story's name this week is Horace and Morris.  Spelling focuses on "ph", "gh/f".  Spelling homework is sent home on Monday .  Please return it on Friday.  We'll have our spelling test Friday.

We'll do a fast fact practice daily with a test on Friday. Please practice both addition and subtraction as both will be on the fast fact tests for the rest of the year. We're down to 7 minutes, so if they're not practicing at home, please help them.  We are doing double digit addition and subtraction, with regrouping.

We'll focus this week on comparing fractions.

IXL is a wonderful way for your child to practice in areas they're having difficulty in.

We'll continue our study about mechanical engineering.  We'll be looking at common objects that are machines and talk about the role mechanical engineers have in designing these machines.
