School Profile
Ft. Rucker Primary School is located on the Ft. Rucker Army Installation at Fort Rucker, Alabama. The installation is primarily a facility for a variety of rotary and fixed-wing aircraft training. Students who are enrolled at Ft. Rucker Primary School are dependents of military personnel at Ft. Rucker, which is funded by the Department of Defense. Ft. Rucker Primary School is one of eleven schools in the Georgia/Alabama Department of Defense Domestic Dependents’ Elementary and Secondary Schools (DoD DDESS). GA/AL DDESS follows the directives, curricula, and guidelines from the umbrella organization of DoDEA (Department of Defense Education Activity).
It is one of two schools located at Ft. Rucker and houses students three years of age (early intervention/special needs), four-year-old students (Pre-K), kindergarten, and first grade. All students are offered bus transportation to school.
The teaching staff at FRPS is comprised of highly qualified teachers. Teachers have a 55-minute planning period and a duty-free lunch each day. There are 190 contract days of which ten (10) are professional development. Staff development days are also incorporated into the weekly calendar through an early release day. Professional development, teacher workshops, colleague collaboration and faculty meetings take place during this time.
The school year is based on a modified year-round academic calendar. This includes an extended break in the fall and spring. The students attend school for 180 days.
Ft. Rucker Primary School was built in 1973. Recent renovations include upgraded playground equipment with new play surfaces and re-tiled gym and cafeteria floors. The DoDEA Safe Schools initiatives have provided increased security with new external and internal keyless access and motion sensors in all hallways.
The support of parents and community is readily visible at FRPS. The school is fortunate to have a strong PTA program which provides books for each child from the Department of Education Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) Program twice a year. The PTA also provides each child a birthday ice cream, and supports teachers reading incentives as well as special projects supplies. Various entities on post offer poster/essay/coloring contests for integrating the study of current events with the community. The command also provides support for the Safe School Program. Crisis management teams such as the military police and fire fighters provide valuable life lessons on safety and personal well-being and protection in school areas.
