Reminders
All student backpacks must contain the following daily: sharpened pencils, ruler, crayons or colored pencils, homework folder, composition book (if 5 day week) and 2 Reading Counts books!
Look at what we're learning!
Reading
Homework: In November we have switched to a Reading Journal. Your child needs to keep track of the total number of books read and insert the number in the space provided at the top at the end of the month; total also for Reading Counts books checked out (not necessarily tests passed on the computer). The student should pick their favorite Reading Counts book to do a journal entry on, then their favorite nonfiction book, and finally their favorite fiction book; last two may or may not be a Reading Counts book. They must use complete sentences and their best best handwriting; please edit beforehand!
Have your child read their Reading Counts books (colored dot book)!
Students need to pass off atleast two Reading Counts books, through a computerized test, each week; read three times prior to testing! Quiz your student on the 5 W's and 1 H (who, what, where, when, why, how). A student who sounds good may not be thinking about the book!

Rubicon Unit 5: Seasonal Changes Making Meaning I
Homework: Over the next two weeks your child will be involved in a nonfiction investigation about trees. We will be reading about the topic in class, but I would also like students to do some research at home. These are some ways that you can help your child.
- Visit with your child about the topic. Ask your child what he or she already knows. Talk about that you know. Help your child write or draw the information on paper so that he or she can bring it to class to share. Make sure your child is able to share the information in his or her own words.
- Visit the library and see if you can find books about the topic for you to read together. Write or draw any information that you find for your child to bring to class. Again, make sure that he or she can say the information aloud in his or her own words.
- If you have access to the Internet at home, search for information on the topic together. If you come across a site that has a lot of information and uses unfamiliar vocabulary, take one or two facts from the site and explain them to your child in your own words. Help your child write or draw the information on paper. Please do not print off pages from the Internet. It is much more valuable to your child's learning if he or she can tell the class one or two facts in his or her own words. Thank you in advance for your help! Due: Sharing Time 11/21/08 8 am. :)

GRADING POLICY FOR
TESTS, CLASSWORK, AND HOMEWORK
Students are graded for mastery of standards in an interdisciplinary manner. Directions must be followed correctly with good penmanship so it is easy to see that the student knows the skill. Incomplete work can indicate that the student doesn't have the skill or didn't finish the work due to a choice of looking for a distraction instead of staying on task. All homework, tests, and class work must be self-checked before being handed in! All work must have a name on it for credit. There are way too many zeros in my gradebook already! :(
TESTING REQUIREMENTS
- Student must remain seated except to sharpen a pencil.
- Students must keep their eyes on their own paper.
- Students are not allowed to talk unless the teacher calls on them.
- Students are not to read aloud above a whisper.
- Students must not move their test papers except to turn them over.
