This Weeks Lessons:
This weeks Languages Arts Lesson- Our focus story is "The Girl Who Brought Down the Wind" By: Constance Veatch Toney
This story illustrates how problems can be solved with practical solutions This selection also shows the creativity and inventiveness of children.
Lesson Objectives:
> brainstorm ideas about inventions
> complete a word connection chart
STORY VOCABULARY:
breeze: a light and gentle wind
rustle: to make or move with a soft, rubbing sound
sway: to swing or bend back and forth or from side to side
uprooted: pulled out by the roots
hurricane: a powerful storm with very high winds and a lot of rain
drifted: is carried along by the wind
Grammar:

Question and Asking Sentences:
Objectives- Students will identify statement and question sentences in the story selection and in their own writing.
Definition: A statement sentence tells something. A question sentence asks something.
Quotation Marks :
Objective: Students will use quotation marks in direct quotations.
Definition: Quotation marks set off the exact words spoken by a character in a story.
The Writing Process:
The 6+1 Traits of Writing Focus this week will be the "ORGINAZATION" Trait.
Organization is the internal structure, the thread of central meaning, the logical and sometimes intriguing pattern of the ideas within a piece of writing.
Writing Lesson:
In this weeks story The Girl Who Brought Down the Wind Cherry Blossom Saves the day in a special way. Students will write their own stories about a heroic character who helps save the day.
Objectives:
> write a story about a heroic character in narrative form
> review declarative and interrogative sentences
> use quotation marks
> use endings -ed and -ing to build words
The Writing Process:
- Prewrite: Choose a topic, Brainstorm ideas, and Make decisions about Role, Complete Graphic Organizer
- Rough Draft: Write a brief personal essay
- Edit/Revise: Work with peers and receive teacher feedback. Check for first-person pronouns, and exclamatory and imperative sentences
- Publish
This Weeks Spelling List: Adding Suffixes -ed and -ing
Be a Strategic Speller: Remember when adding a suffix to a word, first think about how the base word ends. Watch for words that end with e or have a a short vowel sound and a single final consonant.

Ways to Practice Your Spelling Words
Alphabetize the words (ABC order)
Divide each word into syllables
Write each word and circle the vowels
Write each word and circle the consonants
Write each word and cross out any silent letters
Write each word neatly in PEN
Write and neatly frame each word
Make a set of flash cards for studying your words Use each word in a sentence and underline the spelling word
Draw a picture and “hide” the words in the picture
Type the words three times each
Cut the words out of a magazine or newspaper and make a collage
Locate the words in a book and write down the title of the book and page number
Make a word search using the words
Write newspaper headlines using the words
Write the definition for each word
Write a story using all the words (underline the words)

Understanding Numbers: In this unit students will build their number sense by exploring patters, place value, and the size of different numbers.
Unit Five emphasis is on gaining proficiency with the subtraction algorithm, with and without regrouping, to 4 digits.
: Students will learn:
> relating addition and subtraction using fact families
> subtraction patterns
> regrouping in subtraction
> subtracting whole numbers
Science/Health:
Earth Science : In this unit, students will learn how earthquakes, volcanoes, water, and living things change the earth's landforms.
Social Studies:
Chapter Three: Native American Community at Mesa Verde
Lesson Overview: The first American communities were started by Native Americans, who made their clothing, homes, and food from the local natural resources.
Lesson Objectives:
> Understand the importance of national parks
> Understand why it is important to study the past
> Understand and practice the steps in the decision-making process
Homework:
Monday- Spelling-Please see spelling groups above for your list - Homework-List Spelling Words Two times in Alphabetical Order
Tuesday- Math
Wednesday- Social Science or Language Arts
Thursday- Write One Sentence for each Spelling Word. Remember to make a “frame” around your words.
Study for your spelling test using the “Ways to Practice your Spelling Words" our website.
Friday- READ, READ, READ!
FEET UP FRIDAY again this year! Remember to wear socks this day so you can kick off you shoes and put up your feet for Reading Time!!!
The Warm Georgia Sunshine!! Student can bring a hat to wear during recess! Students will be responsible for their own hat and it can only be worn during playground time and must be kept in their backpack during instruction time!
