The History of Brittin Elementary School and “Sir George” Brittin Elementary School was named after SFC Nelson Brittin, Medal of Honor winner. He was awarded the medal of valor posthumously for his service to our country in the Korean War. SFC Brittin is buried in the National Cemetery at Beverly, New Jersey. We are proud of SFC Brittin and maintain a “heroes” display in the main entrance way. “SIR GEORGE”- School Mascot Command Sergeant Major Retired George Plyer was hired as Brittin School’s Plant supervisor in 1987. He was responsible for the maintenance and care of all buildings and grounds. Mr. George was a good friend who cared very much for the students and faculty of this school. In honor of George Plyer, our school mascot the Knight was named “Sir George”. Seven Crepe Myrtle trees were also planted in front of the school in his honor. A symbolic, 4 foot version of “Sir George” the modern soldier is currently “deployed” to IRAQ. Students are able to communicate with Sir George. He sends photos and answers questions about the deployment. Again, please see our Brittin School History and Knight display area near the cafeteria for more information. MISSION STATEMENT The staff at Brittin Elementary School believes that all students can learn. Our students are encouraged to demonstrate mastery of literacy skills to support lifelong learning. |
