Attendance and Absences Procedures

teacher assisting a boy and a girl at a computer

  • School attendance is vital to your child's success in school, especially future success. Learning in school is sequential. Missing days puts your child at risk for missing a piece of a puzzle that teachers are trying to put together with your help. This puzzle, when completed, shows a picture of knowledge and life skills which will contribute to their future success in work and life.
  • Parents who see to it that their child attends every day say to their child, "learning is important", "you need to be at school", "attendance is crucial", "punctuality is vital".
  • Students must be present to receive the greatest benefit from the school experience.
  • Students should be in school unless an illness or emergency exists, keeping them home.
  • All students should arrive on time.
  • A note from the parent or guardian should be provided for the day of the absence or tardy. Next day notes are accepted but failure to communicate an absence or tardy will be deemed as “unexcused”.
  • Parents are required to accompany their child(ren) to, or meet them at, the office when signing them in or out at other than normal entrance times.
  • Fort Stewart School District Attendance Policy
    (effective school year 2008-09)

  • After a student has TEN (10) days unexcused absences, the principal may issue a letter of notice to the parents. At FIFTEEN (15) days unexcused absences, the principal may issue a second notice with a copy to the designated local Military Commander. At TWENTY (20) days unexcused absences, the principal may notify the Family Advocacy Program in accordance with DoD Manual 6400.1-M-1 under the requisite reporting for Educational Neglect.
  • Educational Neglect is knowinly allowing the child to have extended or frequent absences from school, neglecting to enroll a child in school, or preventing the child from attending school for other than justified reasons.
  • Excessive absences is defined as TEN (10) or more unexcused absences. Nothing in this policy statement precludes the Principal from making a referral to the Family Advocacy Program upon the student reaching TEN (10) unexcused absences in the Principal deems a referral is appropriate at that time.
